How do I increase the spacing between the text and the left line number column?

The text and left column are too close, almost touching. I need more space between them. I looked for a "margin" or "padding" setting but couldn't find it. Maybe it doesn't exist. Any idea how to increase the spacing?

i know only this trick:
you can type in console: ed.set_prop(PROP_GUTTER_EMPTY_WIDTH, 50)
but it will be temporary and only for the current editor (tab).

imho it is not worth to make new option for
PROP_GUTTER_EMPTY_WIDTH api value.
we have too many opts.
user can write small plugin with on_start event.
this event can call API line which @veksha shown.

steps

1. call 'Plugins / Make plugin'
2. fill dialog like this, check 2 events - on_start on_tab_change

new file in python is opened (auto created by Make Plugin). fill it like i show i attachement.
i attach 2 plugin files: install.inf and python file.

Big thanks to @Alexey-T for the thorough explanation and the clear plugin instructions. I went through the steps you laid out and managed to successfully create the plugin. As a result, I'm now able to achieve the exact effect I was aiming for. Upon opening files in cudatext, I get a well-proportioned gap between the edge and the text (I actually adjusted the gap to 25), giving it a really airy and pleasant look. I really appreciate it!

another interesting way to add empty space is to use centering_width option.

value of 50 is, i think, the center of CudaText window.
you can use values like 100 or 150. depends on your CudaText window size, editor font size, side panel width, etc...

Thanks for sharing the second tip. It also helps in preventing the text from sticking to the edge. I'll go with the first method for now as it fits my needs, and I've already developed the plugin following Alexey's instructions. Everything's working perfectly now. Nonetheless, I appreciate you bringing up the centering_width setting. I'll activate it when necessary in the future; I think it could come in handy in certain situations.

In fact, I'm not sure which plain text editor allows for adjusting margins. My primary use of the editor is for plain text input and editing, rather than for coding. While having the text snug against the edge might be useful for observing code indentation, for my purposes, having it too close to the left side can actually be distracting and cause visual interference, leading to distraction.

This is why I raised this requirement. Regular rich text editors typically have appropriate default margins and can adjust margins, such as Office Word and WPS. Therefore, if it is to be used as a text editor(not code editor), margins are necessary to provide a more comfortable reading experience.

I've come from sublimetext. No idea if it has an option but mine has about 5 or 6 character width margin on the left. Maybe I set it up when I first configured it, but the lack of margin was the first thing I noticed in CudaText.

Sublime has almost the similar sized gutter (not 'margin'). N chars - digits, 2 chars for bookmk icon, 2 chars for folding icons.

oh I see! Perfect! I've now just changed the color of the gutter to match my background and I now have a visual 'margin'
