Numeric user names are not supported. Reportedly, they are reserved for guest accounts. (See matrix-org/matrix-synapse-ldap3#179 .) That pull request discusses ways to accommodate reservation for guest accounts.

A better way to support numeric usernames would be to prepend guest account usernames with a reserved prefix, such as "syn.guest.".
