Right, the jekylldocumentation states your blog posts need to have a filename of the format:
YEAR-MONTH-DAY-title.MARKUP
but Y-M-D will be overridden if there is a date specified front matter at the top of the file.
One valid solution to avoid confusion and stale dates in filenames is to use the following format for the filename:
0000-00-00-title.MARKUP
and specify the date in the front matter

this means that the markdown files will have no indication of dates when you look at the file structure, which may lead to confusion when we have a lot of posts (to find one specifically you'll have to go by title).
It also means that if we update the structure at any point in the future we will have to account for this functionality, or re-name all posts.
