Abstract

The gender pay gap is a well known phenomenon in the modern world. The trend is generally understood to be that men make more money than women working in the same position. Research shows that there are factors related to childhood environments that shape the gender pay gap certain populations experience in adulthood. These issues of equality have the potential to impact our everyday lives, so we set out to make the results of research in this area more accessible to readers. By choosing the narrative track, we hoped to provide readers with a new way to experience information that was previously locked behind the doors of hard to understand academic journal language. We cleaned up and reformatted the data and added scrollytelling interaction technique to our narratives. The result was an interactive article that engages users to connect with the article content more. The animations also create a more effective impression and emotional impact on the reader. For future work, we hope to add on to readability, responsivenessm and accessibility to furthur refine the interactive article reading experience.

  • Tammy Zhou: creating the choropleth and bubble map (first section of the article)

It was a unique learning experience for all of us coming from non-technical backgrounds to collaborate on this project. We were all new to D3 and collaborative work on github. We learned how to work effectively and help each other out by sharing resources and work in pairs to run debugging sessions. Being in a group helped us avoid rabbit holes and seek out faster solutions. We also received a lot of help and support from the instructors and TA of this class :)
