Making a “Portable Apollo Headless Server” from Touch Bar MBP running Bootcamp

Choices made by Apple, AMD (Even with BootcampDrivers.com drivers), and to a minor
extent the Apollo-fork of Sunshine create a deadlock-condition with what I call, a
"Portable Headless Server" (aka, a "Slabtop" 2018 Touch Bar MacBook Pro, A1990 or 15.1).
Have you priced an Apple MBP Display Replacement?!

This is a Touch Bar Macbook Pro with dGPU of Radeon Pro 555x and iGPU of Intel Iris+ 665
with no attached display! In MacOS Sequoia 15.1.1, the two-major difficulties are easily
worked around; gaining WiFi connection to a never-before connected SSID and then either
Airplay Casting or Remote Desktop Connecting to a suitable device with display. Bootcamp
Windows11 23H2 also works in a previously-connected SSID and with non-natively Miracast
or Remote Desktop Connecting.

The more interesting use-case of a "portable" Sunshine(Apollo) Headless Server creates
the deadlock. With the A1990 Apple created a situation where the built-in Display, can
display output from either the iGPU or dGPU (also kind of a pain-in-my-a$$ pre-boot !!!),
but external Displays only display output from the dGPU. The other pain-in-my-a$$ would
not seem to be related to "display" except that it is especially hard to select an
"Other" Network for an SSID never connected before ... (work-around is a portable router
with an always pre-known SSID and password, facilitating Moonlight(someday Artemis)
connection after which the new SSID can be selected to use either Miracast or Remote
Desktop Connecting via that new "Other" Network after selection (or complete the
ZeroTier or Tailscale connection to continue Apollo/Moonlight(Artemis) operation).

The Apollo solution of "Headless Mode" and a "one-time" connection to a real, physical
external Display while "configuring" works until the Display Configuration changes.
Then without a physical Display, deadlock occurs.

The elegant solution is that a Touch Bar Macbook Pros, even with the topcase removed to
be a “Slabtop" still have a display attached. See:

 Note: The MacOS implementation of Airplay selection on the Touch Bar 
            can be looked at as inspiration (why Apple did not provide a 
            WiFi selection on the Touch Bar in MacOS is anybody's guess!?)

Oh yeah, and with just a little more help, the currently-connected SSID and available
"Other" Networks could be shown in that Display and the Touch Bar could be used to
select an available WiFi Network and enter the password while Apollo has control
during it's start-up process. Violá the Slaptop becomes a "Portable Apollo Headless
Server"! and no need for a portable router.

Will you code this in an upcoming Apollo Release?

I find it hard to understand what you're talking about. Can you make it a bit easier to understand?

Use cases for such extrodinary scenarios will not be actively supported.

From what I can understand, you should be able to connect using USB tethering on your client device, or use a USB nic on both the host and client. That should remove the need to configure wifi when no display is attached. Another solution that costs some money should be getting a portable USB-C display or a pair of AR glasses, for example the newly released XREAL One.

My goal was to have a “Portable” Apollo Headless Server. Portable meaning no USB dongles … just a MBP with no connected display serving-up Sunshine/Moonlight content to suitable client devices.

In a previously-visited WiFi setting (and having launched Apollo at least once with a physical connected display) all works well
(in fact, GREAT — Thank you!) It seems, that after that initial launch with physical connected display) the SudoMaker Virtual Display Driver connected to Generic Monitor (Legacy Mode) allows the dGPU Radeon Pro 555x to render and Apollo accesses to send to a Moonlight Client. As long as the Display Configuration is not altered, the physical connected display is no longer needed and Apollo can do its thing supporting whatever resolutions and refresh rates regardless of whatever that original "physical connected display" provided.

The DEADLOCK occurs because if the Display Configuration is altered Apollo reports a failure including asking if there is a physical connected display (of course, I cannot see that because there is no display) AND Moonlight shows “Connection Error”. I am left to Cold Boot the machine, first into MacOS, before again activating boot to Bootcamp and restarting the machine AFTER again going to find a "physical connected display". Note: This is because the A1990 MBP’s iGPU & dGPU gives no support for pre-boot access to Safe / Recovery / etc modes when restarting from Windows (Bootcamp) — OR FROM A COLDSTART AFTER MacOS crashes!

It is implied that any “physical connected display” (even one with a strange resolution and refresh like 2170 * 60 @ 30Hz) would be sufficient to allow Apollo to “Get Instantiated?” — if that is why a “physical connected display” is required. The link to:

is how I could have an always-available physically connected display. Imbushuo states that this is a “(iBridge Display)” — will that allow Apollo to do whatever it needs to do?

My first note drifted into the select an available WiFi network because Imbushuo’s (iBridge Display) has to be written to to initialize it (and it inherently allows selection) and thus it could provide a useful service like WiFi Network selection!

If you enabled "Headless Mode", a physically connected display should not be needed. It'll only try to detect display after the virtual display is attached.

Maybe you need to specify what GPU you want to use in the "Adapter Name" section.

Can you attach a log when it fails to stream? You can retrieve the log by accessing the config page on a separate device once your macbook connects to your wifi.

I don't have a headless Mac so I'm not sure what's actually happening. Can you also provide the log when it can stream?

Ms Song If I may ask three questions, first: a) From a Moonlight Client, after install I had three applications; Desktop, Steam, and Virtual Desktop.  Is Desktop one of Sunshine's Default installed apps & Virtual Desktop one of Apollo's Default installed apps?b) Is the log output I am sending you, a "rolling" log or is it the log for just the last session?c) In the failure mode, I am seeing, I believe that I initially attempted to launch "Desktop" which failed, and then I successfully launch "Steam" which should be reflected in the log attached.  Isn't launching "Steam" just some extra steps after connecting to the "Desktop"? BTW, I believe the prior log I sent should be of a fail followed by a success; though I can't be sure if I did consecutive "Desktop"s or the same "Desktop" then "Steam" (and I also can't remember if the prior log was from a Sunshine Client or an Artemis Client ... today's log is from a Sunshine Client. a) When Headless Mode is enabled, all apps will launch on virtual display so Desktop and Virtual Display has no differences.
b) It's from the last launch of Apollo. If you restart Apollo, the log will be overwritten.
c) Launching Steam is still the same as Desktop, the only difference is it opens Steam.

I suspect that bootcamp drivers might did something weird about GPUs though, only when the first time a display is connected the graphics card is activated. So I think you might success if you launch Destop twice.

Ms Song Thank you for your continuing help in this discussion.  Please indicate in your reply, if my questions get too bothersome.  I will stop asking and let you get back to improving Apollo and Artemis! I don't know whether .png files as attachments get through (but see attached) ... What is the "Generic Monitor (Legacy Moonli)" ?  Was it created when I used to use Sunshine/Moonlight, before discovering Apollo/Moonlight/Artemis?  In other words was it created by you as part of using Apollo/Artemis (when on an Android Client) or Apollo/Moonlight ?  and, if not, how can I get rid of it?  Note: It is not present on a cold-boot of the machine with nothing connected, either physically or virtually (at lease when Remote Desktop Connection - RDC - allows looking at the Device Manager) -- and by name it does not appear to be related to the RDC usage. I have read that this particular Touch Pad MacBook Pro (A1990) uses only the Radeon Pro 555x dGPU when in Bootcamp mode.  That is interesting because the architecture of the machine is such that the Intel Iris+ 655 iGPU writes to a common framebuffer that is connected to the Internal Display (not present in my case for this "Slabtop", i.e., this "Headless" computer) and when in MacOS the iGPU might even be used exclusively, only letting the dGPU write to the Internal Display (common framebuffer) for certain workloads.  In MacOS, Display Settings are provided to steer certain applications to either the iGPU or dGPU.  If the A1990 Lid is closed (Clamshell Mode) only the dGPU is used ... I wonder if in that case -- it would require "launch Desktop twice"?  I can't test because I don't have a non-Headless A1990 MBP -- and I can't recall someone who does to test it !  And the work-around to "fake" Clamshell Mode has not been identified for the A1990. Perhaps as you suspect, on the initial Launch of Apollo, even when the Adapter Name is specified as Radeon Pro 555x, you "read-through" the Display Driver to find the Monitor ID "handle" (that is why you want a Display Connected, at least when not in Headless Mode, isn't it?).  I suspect the Problem is that the A1990 returns the "handle" for the Internal Display and something later blows-up, because, although there is a framebuffer, there is no Physical Display and something fails to return from some direct query to that "no Physical Display" ... (just a guess)  Further speculation, ... then for some reason when SudoMaker Virtual Display Adapter has come into the picture ("after the virtual display is attached"), both it and the dGPU are happy accessing into the framebuffer and SudoMaker intercepts and replies to any direct queries to the now "Virtual Display" ... ? Two more display-related observations whenever "Client Connected" has been achieved:   The "AMD Software - Adrenalin Edition" app shows the "Global Display" as "Color Display. The (Legacy Moonli) is actually Legaey Moonlight Client capped to 13 chars only. It is the device name when the stream starts. You can modify the device name in PIN tab by clicking the edit button on the corresponding client.

If the lid is closed it might not need to launch twice but I can't be sure. You might be able to trick the macbook into thinking its lid is closed by placing a magnet in the lid sensor area.

Can't thank you enough both for discussion and Apollo + Artemis.
It appears, I have gotten to the best set-up, I am going to get to ... I have Apollo reliably starting on Intel Slabtop (Headless) MBP and four clients; Artemis on AndroidTV, Artemis on Firestick, MoonlightZWM on iPhone, and Moonlight on Desktop (M3 MBP).
In the end, I had to:

Delete ALL entries under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Connectivity
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\ScaleFactors

Re-Install Apollo.

I believe I will still be subject to a complicated re-start path (and will add the "Delete ALL entries under" step) whenever the Display Configuration changes such that I get the original "Deadlock" condition that started this discussion.

I wish I understood better how (and when) Apollo gets started in the proper sequencing of the Boot Process -- which is why my original inquiry even mentioned the WiFi & Other Network Selection utilizing the Display through the Touch Bar -- because I think that is where the persistence of the (semi-)permanent "SudoMaker Virtual Display Adapter" initializing provides the "hook" to start the "Apollo" service...? I don't know how I would gain such a "hook" to write WiFi SSID to the Touch Bar Display and then allow Selection of an Other Network, if needed (assuming I can even figure-out how to write to the Touch Bar Display.
