Trying to open an IM link opens a new empty window

I try to open an IM link which would, in the browser, open teams on a specific member of work, however it just opens a new empty window.

where opening im:[email protected] would in my edge browser would the appropriate teams chat

The browser executable does not seem to recognize this protocol (including mailto:). You may need another plugin. If you have more information or a way to make it work, feel free to share it!
