What is the meaning of projects with version of beeing inactive?

I just found the flag active in the properties auf a project version, but i didn't find any documentation about the meaning. How fit this flag in the lifephases of a product version in production (or even after, when this version is replaced by a newer version)?

I use dependency-track with maven projects and I hope I can use this flag to "delete" snapshot version (and reduce the size of the database/reduce the amount of projects to be checked).
