Hey Derek,
As I previously discussed with you, I will be contributing to Helios and adding some UI improvements, documentation, artwork, and maybe some other little things as I go along. If there's anything else you can think of that may need immediate attention, please let me know.

There's a couple areas that need some UI work, both in the way of slight redesigning and development. I'll list them out below

  • Star/System list view, the page that rises from the bottom when you click the menu button in the bottom middle. There's two things that could be worked on here:
    1. Small Project - Make it easier to see how many planets a system has. Could be as simple and small as just changing the CSS to a lighter color for the circle to the left of the star icons.
    2. MediumBig Project - Implement a table view, and a way to switch between the grid and table views. Currently theres only the grid of stars, which can be kind of hard to read large amounts of data at the same time, so a table would be a better way of showing this data for users who want to be able to see more info about systems before they click into the 3d visualization of it.
  • Filter sidebar - This ones kinda open. Each system has a lot of properties, and right now there's only 3 filters, maybe implement some new ones. Or you could try your hand at redoing the whole filter concept, although that would be a bit more of UX challenge.
  • 3d Visualization Overlay - Currently once you've selected a system to view, there's no info available in the form of text, it's all 3D visualization. It would be cool to have an overlay with some stats about the system and planets. You could go as large as you want with this, but that's the bare minimum. Some other grander ideas for the overlay could include being able to select planets/stars and have the camera in the visualization target that body and follow it.

I'll file an issue for each one of these things. I'd recommend picking one of these that sounds interesting and asking for clarification on any of the stuff I've described. If you want I can give you more exact specifications of what I had in mind, but I'd like to let you kind of experiment.
