i made sure to install to C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Distance in the centrifuge installer as usual btw

Oh gosh I just noticed this. Uuuh.
You may have already fixed this, but if you haven't my best guess is that you need to Verify Integrity of Game Files for Distance. This will essentially uninstall Centrifuge so you can do a fresh install.

If you encounter the exact same issue after that, I may need to see your log file to be of any help.
