Discussed with @jakimowb.

QGIS displays the current map scale here:

It is proposed to display the map scale (e.g. 1:1000) and the map units per pixel (e.g. 30m), e.g. here:

We could make this annotation part of the existing CrossHair functionality, but it is probably better to introduce a new context menu item:

  • Annotations...
    • [on/off] Map Coordinate
    • [on/off] Map Scale
    • [on/off] Map Units per Pixel
