After looking 2 years later, I see some room for simplifications. This could make the code easier to understand and easier to maintain.

Are there any use cases to set a language on initialize, as opposed to using the built in load order (setting since last session, SketchUp language, en-US, whatever is available)?

Are there any use cases to change the preference key after having initialized the object?

Are there any use cases when you don't want to save the language setting for the next session?
