Surviving & Thriving in Troubled Times

or "What is a Jason, and What Should I Do When I See One?"

Book 1: Identifying a Jason

Part 1: Who is a Jason?

How Do I Pronounce This Word?

Here's how to pronounce my name, in case you need to shout at me in another country.

Latin Cyrillic IPA
Jason Джєйсонь1 ˈʤeɪsᵊn

By What Other Names May We Summon It?

You can call me within business hours most things, but never Jay2.

Known Aliases
  • Comrade
  • Oi, You
  • Who Broke This?

How Can I Refer to a Jason Without Using its Filthy Name?

My pronouns are he/him/his3.

Part 2: What is a Jason?

Is a Jason... Normal?

No! A Jason, in fact, has a very exciting brain.

For a long time, Jason behaviour was merely labelled as inexplicable or difficult but, after 3 decades of observation, we thing we have the answer.

Plain English Please?

So basically I have severe ADHD (Combined Type), which is the source of everything that's both good and difficult about me.

There's a possibility of some low-level autism in there as well, which you can think of as an extra spice to the ADHD Chaos Dinner.

Here's some basics:

  • My hyperactivity is mostly internalised; if look like I'm zoning out, I'm actually deep down a rabbit hole of thought. It may or may not be useful.

  • My attention span is almost unhealthily extensive. My ability to choose what I'm focusing on, however, is essentially embryonic.

  • I am time blind. I essentially don't have a circadian rhythm, and am dependent on a huge load of alarms that I integrate with my calendar, my notes, my to do list etc

  • My time horizon is limited. Anything more than a week away is essentially fictional, and I find it difficult to respond to it. I've managed to nail this down a lot in the 6 years since I got diagnosed.

  • Most ADHD people are great at network thinking (problem solving, thinking like a mind map) and not great at sequence thinking (flowchart routine style). This means I am better at complex problem solving than I am at doing apparently simple things.
