login.gov insufficient solution(s) for I.D. verification #1408
Comments
Having closed this issue, does that mean there are no updates, i.e. 18F and US Digital Services have not figured out how to expand the number of options for verifying identity and correspondingly there is no way to escalate resources and attention to the acknowledged (we are working on more ways to verify) issue with the login.gov solution? |
Accepting more types of evidence for identity verification is a priority for Login.gov. We recently announced that we will begin accepting passports as evidence during Fiscal Year 2025. See our roadmap for more: https://login.gov/partners/roadmap/ |
Your feedback is appreciated. There will be additional questions pursuant to some of the information shown in the Program Roadmap (End User Impact). Such things as: While the Login.gov program developers continue to work on improvements, ehancements and solutions will the international US citizen residents be covered in terms of access to previously established and long term government accounts (SS, VA Health, VA Life) and services? Specifically, we keep being given deadlines by the various agency partners that fall prior to the estimated timelines presented in the Roadmap for additional solutions. Will the IAL2-compliant identity verification work with the end user relying on an international (non US subscriber) cell phone and/or will it be possible for an internet-based video link be used? Is the 24X7 contact center only available to agency partners? How will the GSA notify the concerned public when new developments specific to identity verification methods are completed and ready to use? |
Thanks for your thoughtful comments. We will pass them along to the rest of our team. |
In the instance a U.S. citizen resides outside of the 50 states and does not maintain a state physical address or a state driving license or have an "other" state issued I.D., the login.gov system falls short in terms of I.D. verification through to account creation. I.E., not possible to create an account.
Login.gov Support states "We’re currently working to add more ways to verify your identity" since at least October of 2023 but there have been no announcements on having added more ways.
It appears the GSA has chosen to move forward on a complete transition to a single-user login solution for all federal government website access without the login.gov I.D. verification issue having been resolved.
Purpose of this issue entry:
Describe the problem to check to see if anybody knows of any updates pursuant to the problem and/or if it may be possible to escalate on attention being given to the problem.
