If you use Advanced Editing Mode to edit a chest, it spits out all of the items from the chest. Then if you put these items back in the chest and try to craft using them, it won't work. You'll have to instead pull them out of the chest into your inventory to craft with them, or make the chest new from scratch.
To Reproduce
Steps for the devs to reproduce the behavior:
Build any chest type in an area where there are no other chests (or none of the chests have the item you will be testing with, in this example, wood)
Load wood into chest so you have none left in your inventory
Verify that build from chest is working by taking out a hammer and seeing if you can build a workbench with the wood still in the chest
Switch off the hammer, hover over the chest, and press numpad 0 (or whatever you have enter AEM set to) to enter Advanced Editing Mode. Press numpad Enter (or whatever you have finish placing aem edit set to) to place the "edited" chest.
Pick up the wood that should have been ejected out of the chest due to it being edited, and put it back in the chest. Ensure you don't have any left in your inventory
Try to see if you can build a workbench and none of the materials from that chest will show as available
Expected behavior
The chest should still count as a source allowing you to craft using its items as it did before it was edited.
Troubleshooting
I was able to get around this by remaking a new chest from scratch, but this is quite annoying when the chest is very specifically placed with altered rotation and placement into specific places.
