Scikit-build (https://scikit-build.readthedocs.io/en/latest/index.html) have been designed to deal exactly with our case (build cPython extensions from C++ codes using CMake) and looks better suited for this project and better maintained in the long run. There is also a template repo to set up scikit-build with pybind11 C++ code (https://github.com/pybind/scikit_build_example)
