Currently, Heart of the Machine only has one biome: the Thinking Forest biome. In order for the portal connectivity to have interesting mechanics, Heart of the Meachine needs to have multiple biomes.
Biomes that we currently plan to add:
Wasteland. This will generally resemble how the Thinking Forest is now, with very little on the surface.
Machine Forest. This will be similar to the Thinking Forest in that it is supposed to be lush, but it will have a lot of ruined structures and a slightly different aesthetic with different kinds of foliage.
Infinite Domain (better name pending). These biomes won't generate Nectere portals and won't have a block multiplier, being unable to connect to any other dimensions. These biomes will also be where some important energy-generating structures will be located.
The Thinking Forest, Wasteland, and Machine Forest will likely be biomes who's portals connect to the Overworld. We also plan on adding biomes with portals that connect to the Nether and The End but those would best be discussed in a separate issue once the mod is to that point.

I am hoping to add another Overworld-connecting biome or two in the 0.2.0 update as well as a Nether-connecting biome and maybe and End-connecting biome, but we'll have to see what I have time for.
