What are hints and hint sources?

I see mentions of hints and hint sources in the app but I can't find any documentation on what these are. I can see some discussions involving these, but again no explanation. Please can someone kindly clarify, or even better write some docs? Thanks!

What are called "hints" in this app are the little symbols you can make appear in the keys.

If the setting is enabled in the Preferences, these little symbols appear in the top right-hand corner of each key.

Thanks! So what's the point of the "Select hint source" dialog? I see 5 hint sources offered as options, and it's not obvious what any of them do.

The point is simply to choose what you want to appear as a hint on the keys.
You can also choose the order of priority by dragging the items in the dialog.
Is it clear now?

No, that much was already clear, but it's not clear what each hint source offers. For example, what exactly happens when the "Number row" hint source is enabled? Or the "Symbols" hint source?
