Indonesian is the official language of Indonesia. It is also one of the languages used in East Timor.
Indonesian is a form of Malay (bahasa Melayu). For the majority of Indonesians, it is not their mother tongue, and they only learn it at school, around the age of five. Malay is, however, the regional language (bahasa daerah) of the east coast of the island of Sumatra, and more specifically of the eastern coastal strip of the province of North Sumatra and the provinces of Riau, Riau Islands, Jambi and South Sumatra, and of the coastal strip of the provinces of West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan and East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo.
