Currently the PIP exploration panel displays statistics about three types of regions
whole sequences
focus area
selected area
Focus area are relevant when an annotation file is loaded in addition to the sequences (e.g. gene annotations in gtf format).
It enable to select one feature (e.g. a single gene), and to compare the identity statistics between this feature and the whole sequences. They were implemented by @thomasdenecker on request from @hchiapello .
I however find that there is a confusion between the "focus area" and the "selected area". In particular,
"Focus area" is displayed even if there is not annotation file, and in this case the stats are the same as for the whole sequence
"Focus area" and "Selected area" look much alike. I however understand that "focus area" has one more characteristics: the drawing limits (abscissa) are going from the start to the end of the focus area.
Suggestions
1.Try to alleviate the ambiguity between focus area and selected area. Rename "focus area" to "Selected feature" ? Not sure, because we would loose the idea of focussing (zooming on a the selected feature). Other alternatives should be discussed here.
2. Display the "Selected feature" statistics only if an annotation file has been loaded and a feature has been selected.
3. Display the "Selected area" statistics only if an area has been selected.
