Did this week:

• Wrote hacktober fest issues (7) and helped hacktober festers
  • forking seed code added
  • Added forking badge when editing someone else's project
  • Zoom to fit (except for openSCAD still todo)
• Released the f&#king CQ customizer 🙌, Massive thanks to @jmwright, as well as @hrgdavor
• Team effort from @hrgdavor, @franknoirot and myself to get a "hide console" toggle in the side tray working
• Finished up and release the social card changes I had started last week.

Going to do

• Back end stuff, and I mean it this time lol, I've enlisted my brother to help, We're aiming to have a bit of a kick off meeting to talk about options

Did this week

• Implemented Added recent projects list to logged-in nav #557
  • @Irev-Dev helped fix a code smell with Refactor recent projects into it's own cell #558, discussed the philosophy of Redwood's cells. It's generally not good to have a boolean like isMinimal alter so much of the frontend representation of a component.
  • Still need to refactor to consolidate to 1 nav component.
  • @Irev-Dev idea for future: show both your recent projects and general projects that you've recently looked at, store the list in browser storage, not critical.
• Started building out Variants in Figma design system, laying groundwork for Interactive Components and maybe using Figma in future to prototype user flows in addition to design look and feel.
• Helped out on console Hide console option in view menu #545
• Showed @Irev-Dev my work on the blog post, will revisit
  • Discussed what @franknoirot's hestitation is with finishing, just a mental block.
  • @Irev-Dev mentioned Jessie Frazelle's answer to a question he asked her about why she though GUI CAD had stalled in innovation, she thought there isn't one clear reason, but there seems to be a victory lap mentality with the dominant companies right now.
  • @franknoirot also mentioned a talk from the creator of Haskell about inertia when you have a lot of users making it harder to change.

• Still thinking about exported metadata, not quite comfortable releasing. In theory shouldn't be too much.
• Animations can output an array of images or STLs with suffixes for each frame, which complicates the integration a bit.
• Also chasing down MacOS issues this week.

• Got CQ customizer launched 🏆 Add CadQuery customizer #547
• Was wondering how the other integrations do to hide certain parameters from the customizer pane?
  • JSCAD is explicit to opt into the customizer
  • OpenSCAD includes all top-level parameters before the first module definition, and also offers a special group called "hidden" that allows to hide certain top-level one.
• Right now CQ pulls every top-level parameter, so will explore a better way to make that more elegant. Potentially something with decorators, will ask CQ core team discussion for ideas.
• @Irev-Dev mentioned that he could document that constraint and users might be okay with it.

Miscellaneous

• Discord was so active this week!
  • Really interesting discussion with Jojain this week about their workflow as a stress engineer. Got @Irev-Dev thinking about how CadHub could fulfill CI/CD processes like FEM. It would pretty difficult to tag certain features as not necessary for FEM. Great to talk to someone with a mechanical background.
  • Discussed CadHub interaction between the viewer and code.
    • @franknoirot mentioned that he would love to get spatial comments and other collaborative elements in future, sees that as more important than getting code generation from the viewer/GUI side.
      • Always thinking about how to lay the foundation for collaborative 3D modelling. Just watched a brand new video about CRDTs.
    • @Irev-Dev mentioned that code generation and GUI-to-code tracing will probably be a hard road to head down with our 3 integrations, each handles things differently, and the mesh ends up being a kind of blank slate with no relationship to the code as it stands now. But spatial comments sound significantly easier.
    • @t-paul mentioned ability is available in OpenSCAD to select elements in the viewer, uses a special hidden renderer that uses the AST output of the program, and ties it to a pixel ID. Only available in preview for the reason that an exported mesh is basically wiped clean of all program information.
  • Aman's talk was so great to see this week, his research is really impressive moving the conversation forward with blending GUI and code representations of CAD. @Irev-Dev reminded everyone of his paper before this that lays out the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches really well.

Was not able to attend again. But interested in making an experiment to extract info from ast to attach info about each separate entity (line num/char from/ to). This could give some perspective about challenges it creates. I have a feeling this type of experiment would be more welcome on CadHub than on jscad main.
