Context

Retaining's memories is a non-profit fanmade visual novel based on the many routes and media of the Kagerou project.

Our aim story wise is to cover the two first manga routes with twists and then add alternate endings from the different media. We also plan on adding bonus routes with specific characters, and Yoomster's Route XX.

Since Aug. 2021, we have made the choice to make the game scenario more centered on the concept of collaborative novels. The community can now create the script (as long as we approve them), while the executive team will approve or suggest contributions.

How to be part of the team ?

In order to contribute to the fangame, you'll have to:

  1. Find a role we're requesting
  2. see if your profile matches both general and role specific requirements
  3. join our Discord server, explain your motivation and be approved by the executive team.

General requirements

  • Be able to speak in English
  • Be okay to be spoiled about kagepro / the fangame scenario
  • Your profile and your contributions may be rejected by the executive team if you have had a history of dramas or bans

We're essentially looking for roles marked with ⭐

Writers

Writers may:

  • Draft the story and the paths (this is a visual novel so the story may differ based on what you're interacting)
  • ⭐ Write the narration and dialogues
  • ⭐ Correct English
  • Design ideas of visual effects or mini-games.

Requirements:

  • Having a writing talent. Your job is to captivate your audience by creating something original and telling a story better than the original support
  • Being able to write regularly and communicate a lot with the other contributors in order to make a real collaborative novel.
  • While we need the two points with a star, the others are naturally done when you are working
  • The story should follow the executive team suggestions.

Curious notes :

  • What we missed since 4 years is that a visual novel should have a better narration than a better programming. This is why we're particularly exigent for this role.

Illustrators

Illustrators may draw:

  • ⭐ backgrounds
  • ⭐ specific scenes of the game
  • visual novel sprites.

Requirements:

  • logically, be aware that your art is shipped with the game, just as the source code. Where you still have the copyright, we don't provide ways to pack and prevent the original asset to be seen or extracted by the user.

Curious notes :

  • You can also organize yourself to work with others (ie. someone does the lines and you do colors).

Programming

Programmers may :

  • ⭐ put the illustrations, music, text and effects in the game.
  • ⭐ improve the current codebase
  • ⭐ design and program mini-games, plugins and features, programming tools.
  • ⭐ possibly contribute to the game engine by itself if it's necessary

While the first point is basic and easy to code, the other points are the most exciting, but they also require more time and experience (still, don't self-censor).

Requirements:

  • Knowledge in front-end (old-school vanilla js and of course html/css) is necessary.
  • You don't need to know how the game engine works, you'll learn it by practice and some help from us.
  • Mastering git and github is also necessary, but we can help you to learn it.

Curious notes:

  • If you're experienced and need an example of a plugin, we developed a layered + perfect cross-fade feature. Created in CSS, this one don't work in firefox and is not optimized in size. So a possible improvement would be to pack every images into one, crop correct parts, assemble them in a canvas, and find a way to manipulate pixels fast enough to create the cross-fade effect.

Translators

Translation is not our priority.

Think of a translation as the whole source code duplicated, where you override English dialogs into your language. When we make a lot of changes/implement new features in the main code, the translation becomes outdated, and it's actually difficult to maintain them if there is a lot of changes.

We're planning to create computer aided plugins to maintain the translations and write faster the script, but don't expect to see such tool soon.
