Sidebar Tab UX

I'm no longer certain that the sidebar sliding tabs is a good design. The sliding is kind of cumbersome, and the lack of slider button borders makes for some displeasing states such as the one below.

Another suggestion would be to have a fixed number of icons, with a "more" (or "...") button that presents a dropdown containing the rest of the hidden icons. Accessing the hidden icons incurs an extra step, but I think it's better than the sliding tabs.
