Different examples from exercises #96
Comments
Suggested Exercise/Example: Working with MARC fixed fields You could add an exercise that demonstrates how to edit a specific position in a fixed field leader. e.g., add to 008 position 23 the code o to show it’s an online item. You might need some e-books in your sample MARC data with 300 fields indicating "1 online resource" but they are missing this Form fixed field. Or maybe you just suggest this edit because it is more common. |
Suggested Exercise/Example: Change one or both indicators in a MARC field How to change indicators: current example is 050 field, which isn’t something catalogers don't typically need to do. You could make it more typical by changing the 505 Content note indicators, second indicator says whether basic or advanced. You might have to update your sample MARC data to create a few enhanced 505s with the wrong indicator for this exercise. |
Suggested Exercise/Example: Add, Delete, or Change information for a subfield in a MARC field How to change a subfield: better example would be to add subfield |q in the 020 ISBNs field. Many 020 |a subfields have extraneous information (enumeration, print, electronic, etc.) and it can be moved to subfield |q. |
Suggested Exercise/Example: Add/Delete a MARC field Example for adding a delete field is 655 for electronic books, which is something you rarely do (it’s outdated). We suggest reversing the action of the exercise, your team adds 655_4 |a electronic books to the sample MARC data, and then demonstrate taking them out. |
Suggested Exercise/Example: Find, Find All, and Replace The example in this exercise is a bit advanced. Using the Find/Replace function to change the proxy prefix in the 856 field is not the normal/recommended way to make this change. Figuring out the text string for inserting the proxy using this function is difficult (learners in our workshop couldn’t do it). Straight up text replacement within all the MARC fields would be easier and demonstrate how powerful (and somewhat unpredictable) this function can be. Consider using an example that has the Find/Replace function change some text appropriately and some inappropriately, that could demonstrate the power and dangers of this suite of tools. |
