Extend MDAnalysis Interoperability

Hi all,

I heard about GSoC through @hmacdope and am keen to complete a project with MDAnalysis. I have been using MDAnalysis the past two months during a summer research placement and have become quite familiar with some of the membrane and protein analysis tools. I am currently in the third year of my undergraduate majoring in biochemistry and minoring in computational sciences, with some software engineering electives thrown in for good measure. I'm comfortable with a handful of languages, mostly Python, Java and C/C++ (in that order), and have experience with OOP, environment setup and testing.

Extending MDAnalysis to interoperate with another relevant package will be a great opportunity for me to apply my current skillset and also extending it further. I haven’t worked in open source before and I am keen to learn how it works, and produce code which can be useful for analysis and scientific applications. I am currently going through the documentation to setup myself and my laptop for contributing, as well as preparing an application. Any guidance on which points to hit for my application would be greatly appreciated.
