SOME TIPS ON HOW TO IMPROVE READABILITY
=======================================
IMPORTANT
---------
Readability Redux is just a wrapper around Readability. If you want to
improve css styling, add new fonts or whatnot, consider contributing
to the original Readability project[1].
Layout
------
Okay, having that sorted out, let's look how RR is organized:
/ - some boilerplate files, like the one you're reading right now
/icon*.png - icon files. Accepted dimensions are 16x16, 19x19, 48x48 and 128x128.
/readability - "stock" Readability files
/readability.js - original Readability script
/readability-x.js - Readability that works with selections ("experimental")
/redux - extension-specific files
/background.js - background page
/contentscript.js - content script (launched with every tab)
/options.* - options page
/example.html - example text shown in the options page
Innards
-------
There are three extensions scripts: background.js, options.js and contentscript.js.
All communication happens through message passing.
Note that background.js accepts messages sent by another extensions.
Here are the interactions between those 3 scripts:
+ background.js - main pivot of the extension
Messages accepted:
+ {"type": "javascript"} - returns a javascript code that readabilizes a document.
You can pass an additional parameter "settings" with
which you can customize the script. For the accepted
format, see what getSettings spews out.
+ {"type": "getSettings"} - gets settings object. (see source for more)
+ {"type": "setSettings"} - analogous
+ {"type": "render", "tab_id": 123} - launches Redability in the given tab.
If tab_id is ommitted, sender.tab.id
is assumed.
Actions performed:
+ When browser button or context menu item is clicked, sends "render" message
to the proper context script.
+ When settings are changed (through setSettings) sends "newSettings" message
to all its content scripts.
+ options.js
Actions performed:
+ Communicates with the background.js through "getSettings"/"setSettings".
+ contentscript.js
Messages accepted:
+ {"type": "render"} - launches Readability in the tab.
+ {"type": "newSettings"} - updates internal settings storage used for
key shortcuts.
Actions performed:
+ When correct key shortcut is pressed, Readablity is launched.
+ When Readability is launched, uses "javascript" message to get the
code from background.js
