This Developer Manual aims to assist users interested in extending or improving
\emph on
morpho.
\emph default
Developers interested in adding new features to
\emph on
morpho
\emph default
can utilize one of the following mechanisms for expansion:
\end_layout
\begin_layout Itemize
\series bold
Modules
\series default
are written in the
\emph on
morpho
\emph default
language and are loaded with the
\family typewriter
import
\family default
keyword.
Creating a module is no different than writing a
\emph on
morpho
\emph default
program!
\end_layout
\begin_layout Itemize
\series bold
Extensions
\series default
are written in C or C++ using the
\emph on
morpho
\emph default
C API.
These are also loaded with the
\family typewriter
import
\family default
keyword; the distinction between modules and extensions is purposefully
not visible to the user; a module could be reimplemented as an extension
with the same interface, for example.

Contributing to the

morpho
\emph default
source code.
\series default
Changes to the core data types, improvements to the compiler, etc.
could be incorporated into the
\emph on
morpho
\emph default
source directly.
We highly recommend connecting to the
\emph on
morpho
\emph default
developers before doing this to check if the idea is already being worked
on, or whether there is guidance or advice on how specific features should
work.
Bug reports, suggestions for new features are welcome; please see

\family default
in the
\emph on

git repository.

Modules and extensions can be distributed in their own git repository as
a package.

or functionality.
A package is simply a git repository that contains some or all of the following
file structure:

.morpho

files that define a module
\end_layout

Morpho

searches both its base installation and all known packages when trying
to locate resources.
We anticipate that at some future point a package management system similar
to pip will be created; the structure above is intended to be sufficiently
simple that different installation approaches could be supported.

\end_inset
plain text formatting system.
Help files should be put in the

\end_layout
\begin_layout Standard
Each entry begins with a heading, for example:

Using different heading levels indicates to
\emph on
morpho
\emph default
that a topic should be included as a subtopic.
Here, the two heading level 2 entries become subtopics of the main topic,
which uses heading level 1:

\end_layout

and lists can be included like so:

\end_layout

The terminal viewer will syntax color this automatically.
\end_layout
\begin_layout Standard
\emph on
Morpho
\emph default
(ab)uses the Markdown hyperlink sytax to encode control features.
To specify a tag or keyword for a help entry, create a hyperlink where
the label begins with the word
\family typewriter
tag
\family default
, and include the keyword you'd like to use in the target as follows:
\begin_inset listings
inline false
status open
\begin_layout Plain Layout
## Min
\end_layout
\begin_layout Plain Layout
[tagmin]: # (min)
\end_layout
\begin_layout Plain Layout
\end_layout
\begin_layout Plain Layout
Finds the minimum value...
\end_layout
\end_inset
This unusual syntax is necessary as Markdown lacks comments or syntax for
metadata, and we use hyperlinks to encode text in a way that is valid Markdown
but remains transparent to regular Markdown viewers.
The
\family typewriter
#
\family default
is a valid URL target, and the construction in effect 'hides' the text
in parentheses.
Since hyperlink labels (the part in square brackets) must be unique per
file, add any text you like, typically the name of the tag, after the word
\family typewriter
tag
\family default
.
\end_layout
\begin_layout Standard
Similarly, to tell the help viewer to show a table of subtopics after an
entry, add a line like this:
\end_layout
\begin_layout Standard
\begin_inset listings
inline false
status open
\begin_layout Plain Layout
[showsubtopics]: # (subtopics)
\end_layout
\end_inset
Any characters after
\family typewriter
showsubtopics
\family default
in the label are ignored, so you can add additional characters to ensure
a unique label.

\begin_layout Subsection
Importing modules
\end_layout
\begin_layout Standard
The
\family typewriter
import
\family default
keyword allows you to load modules and extensions with the same simple
syntax.
Conceptually, each file defines a
\emph on
namespace
\emph default
, a collection of symbols, and we'd like ways to control how symbols from
one namespace appear in another.
When you use import, by default all symbols defined become visible.
That is, if you include the line
\begin_inset listings
inline false
status open
\begin_layout Plain Layout
import color
\end_layout
\end_inset
in your program, you can use all functions, classes and global variables
defined by the color module.
Some modules, however, may define a lot of things that aren't necessary
for your program and indeed may use symbols that you would like to use
yourself; this phenomenon is often referred to as
\emph on
namespace polution
\emph default
.
\end_layout
\begin_layout Standard
The first approach is to use the
\family typewriter
for
\family default
keyword in the import statement, e.g.
\end_layout
\begin_layout Standard
\begin_inset listings
inline false
status open
\begin_layout Plain Layout
import color for Red, Color
\end_layout
\end_inset
When this statement is encountered in your program, the
\family typewriter
color
\family default
module is loaded, but only the symbols
\family typewriter
Red
\family default
and
\family typewriter
Color
\family default
become visible to your code.
Symbols like Blue and Green that are also defined in the
\family typewriter
color
\family default
module are not visible, so this code,
\end_layout
\begin_layout Standard
\begin_inset listings
inline false
status open
\begin_layout Plain Layout
print Blue
\end_layout
\end_inset
would raise the
\emph on
SymblUndf
\emph default
compilation error.
This approach is ideal for when you only want to use a small subset of
symbols from a module, and you know them ahead of time.
\end_layout
\begin_layout Standard
The second approach is to use the
\family typewriter
as
\family default
keyword, e.g.
\end_layout
\begin_layout Standard
\begin_inset listings
inline false
status open
\begin_layout Plain Layout
import color as col
\end_layout
\end_inset
which loads the color module, but
\emph on
none
\emph default
of the symbols defined are directly visible to you.
Instead, you must access them by referring to
\family typewriter
col
\family default
in your code like this, e.g.
\end_layout
\begin_layout Standard
\begin_inset listings
inline false
status open
\begin_layout Plain Layout
print col.Red
\end_layout
\end_inset
The symbol
\family typewriter
col
\family default
refers to a specific namespace; when the compiler encounters this code,
it looks up the symbol
\family typewriter
Red
\family default
in the namespace
\family typewriter
col
\family default
.
Using the symbol directly like so
\end_layout
\begin_layout Standard
\begin_inset listings
inline false
status open
\begin_layout Plain Layout
print Red
\end_layout
\end_inset
would raise an error.
Hence,
\family typewriter
Red
\family default
is now free for you to use!
\end_layout
\begin_layout Standard
You can even combine these two,
\end_layout
\begin_layout Standard
\begin_inset listings
inline false
status open
\begin_layout Plain Layout
import color as col for Red, Color
\end_layout
\end_inset
which defines a namespace
\family typewriter
col
\family default
, but only includes
\family typewriter
Red
\family default
and
\family typewriter
Color
\family default
in it.
\end_layout
