setup_mode on

In Motion setup_mode on had the desired effect allowing for tuning motion detection, in Motionplus it has no effect. The definition in docs says Run in setup mode and provide lots of messages related to images processed. but I get no extra message either in terminal or in the log file.
Is this not enabled? Am I missing something?
Worth noting that I find motion detection to be much better in Motionplus but it's a bit too sensitive; the camera is looking over my yard and it catches every single bird that flies by.
