When a character is equipped with a bastard sword they have both 1-handed and 2-handed attacks listed under their melee attacks. However, the system always rolls both damage types. It should only roll the damage for the chosen attack.
There are two reasons for this. First, it can be genuinely heartbreaking when you make a 2H attack, but the 2H damage is low while the 1H damage is high (and vice versa). It feels like you got cheated. I know this is not rational, but it's real. Second, it can introduce confusion when it comes to applying the damage. There is no indication as to a 1H or 2H attack was made and there is a risk that the GM will apply the incorrect damage. This can easily be corrected when it happens, but it wastes time and it may not always be obvious that a mistake was made.
Given that there are two separate attack actions on the player's sheet, it makes sense that only the damage for the chosen attack be rolled.
