Sun Ultra 24 Server Build :: Nathan Vaughn — Adventures in programming and tech

Background Early last year, I went to my university’s surplus store. I was looking to purchase an old Mac Pro tower with the intent to do a case mod with it, since I knew the surplus store had a few available for cheap and I thought it would be a fun project. However, while looking around, I spotted a beautiful Sun Ultra 24 on the shelf. I quickly decided to purchase that instead for two reasons.

Hrm, I think this was caused by my comment? It seems half broken then. When I tried commenting I got:

My comment text got lost, but the tldr: you can just snap some 120mm fans in the exhaust fan bracket. Just need to watch out for:

1. The fan doesn't bulge out. Some 120mm fans use the 120mm mount points but extend beyond it. These won't fit.
2. The fan needs a spot where the clips can grab onto. I stuck a Be Quiet Pure Wings 2 in there, but the Silent Wings 3 won't fit because there's nowhere for the clips to hook onto.

Oops, I must have forgotten to enable Utterances for all my repos, fixed now.

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't have any extra 120mm fans lying around, but I'll look into getting one that works. The fan noise when rebooting is really annoying.
