I'd like a looping animated Nix snowflake for use with Plymouth. Any chance someone with experience in this sort of thing could make this happen?

That definitely of interest, but I can't find the individual frames. Will continue to investigate.

On a related note: Does anyone know how I might get OpenGL working in a nix derivation? I tried adding Mesa to nativeBuildInputs, but that didn't work.

(Genix uses OpenSCAD, which requires either a running Xorg server or OpenGL).

you would somehow need to be able run a cpu-only opengl backend. I assume llvmpipe might do the trick. Perhaps you also need a framebuffer which xvfb and cage can provide.

You can also consider running the build in a nixos vm
