I currently have 50 connections in the config directory. The problem I notice is that when I right-click on the openvpn gui icon in the taskbar, these connections are not listed in alphabetical order. Any idea how to get it?

Depends on how the ovpn files are organized within the config folder and its sub-folders. All ovpn's in one folder or individually in a subfolder each named after the ovpn file itself, they should appear alphabetically. The latter is how imported ovpn's are saved.

Otherwise the listing will be in the order which a recursive directory listing will produce, which I believe would be the same as:
dir /A-D /B /S OpenVPN\config

Also, the user's configs are scanned first and then system-wide one's, and listed in order found. If you using deeply nested subdirectories, you may want to turn on nested view in Settings->Advanced for an organized listing.
