User Story

As a seller adding products, I want a predefined list of top-level categories, so that buyers can easily find my products relevant to their interests more efficiently.

Acceptance Criteria

  1. A predefined list of top-level categories should be created and implemented.
  2. The categories should be comprehensive, limited, and logically organized to encompass all the product types offered on the platform.
  3. Each top-level category should be clearly named and easily recognizable by users (recognition not recall).
  4. The categories should enhance the user experience by facilitating quick and intuitive product navigation (buyer side).
  5. Collaboration and discussion with the team are necessary to finalize the list of top-level categories as well as data analysis.

Draft Categories: (To Be Reviewed)

  1. Clothing
  2. Art
  3. Sports & Outside
  4. Food & Drink
  5. Home & Tech
  6. Health & Beuty
  7. Other

UX Justification:

There are two general users in e-commerce; people who know what they want and people who are looking to browse to find something. To enable the second user type we need a better buyer browsing experience but this is dependent on the the seller categorisation to be good.

How we choose the top level categories? With a hardcoded list or based on the most used ones?

I think we need to look at the existing set of categories that have been made on Plebeian, if you can provide me a list? Then I'll also look at general used categories on similar fiat websites/bitcoin websites and devise a categorisation.

I suggest we have no more than 8 hard coded categories, ideally 6. This will make the browsing for something to buy experience much better on the customer side.

Here you can see the ones in use https://staging.plebeian.market/category

Thanks, I'm assuming these are all the same as on the original plebeian.market? I'll start on this right away and come back with a draft list to review.

I can already see we have 3 t-shirt categories with different spellings and some spelling mistake categories such as Nostt. We might need to think about how best to handle potential duplication due to mistakes. I'm not sure if my approach fully protects against this.

Thanks, looking at our existing items and the broader fiat market with similar platforms here is my first draft. This covers our existing items nicely and gives room for popular items, can work on the wording. I wonder if we should have a Bitcoin category?

  1. Clothing
  2. Art
  3. Sports & Outside
  4. Food & Drink
  5. Home & Tech
  6. Health & Beuty

I think maybe we should have bitcoin as a top level category too, not sure.
