The article is https://www.thepaper.cn/newsDetail_forward_6452010. As far as I can tell, contrary to Author's Note, Li Ning (李宁) and the top academician is the same person.

Chinese Academy of Engineering is 中国工程院. Lab animal is 实验动物. Searching Baidu for 中国工程院 实验动物 site:www.thepaper.cn gives the link as the fourth result.

This is very interesting. So Li Ning was in fact arrested for selling lab animals.

Feel free to make a pull request for this. We have just uploaded the source code for our document to the "src" folder - you can just modify claim2.scrbl to include this.

It is actually quite difficult to find good references to him selling animal labs. The Chinese prefer to push out the usual money mismanagement line. But I saw that a few weeks ago:

He was found to have sold experimental pigs, cows, and milk to local markets between 2008 and 2012. Li and his colleagues kept the money from the sales, close to 1.5 million dollars. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison on January second, 2020.

Note:

  • They mention colleagues, which suggest possibly a systemic issue - not just one bad apple. I can't find any other mentions of these colleagues and of their modus operandi.
  • $1.5 mln of sales is an awful lot of money. What was he selling? Just beef and milk? That would mean trucks of meat rolling out... makes no sense. Pangolin scales? Would get there quicky.
