confirmation when signing up for the newsletter

I was talking to someone who had to sign up for the newsletter twice. Apparently something went wrong the first time and the second time they were uncertain that it had worked because they didn't get confirmation that they sign-up had gone through. Would it be easy to add an automated confirmation when people register?

If you use a proper "mailman" list, people do get a confirmation and can also (un)subscribe themselves without admin intervention. Furthermore, the list cleans itself of email addresses that are outdated (i.e. when the emails bounce multiple times).
