How do I ensure that selected word is replaced with the trailing substring is the same?

I pretty often find myself in a situation like this:

1. Try to type local but do a typo like lucal with my cursor at luc|al.
2. Ctrl-w and type loc and blink helpfully shows me local as an item.
3. I accept it but end up with localal in my buffer.
