(warning: rant)

In broader and particular contexts I've grown tired of the dependency to big corporations. In tech, the dependency we have towards Google, among others, is astounding: search, browser, email, documents, analytics, mobile... so the question lies there: would it be possible a world without Google?

Not that this is a practical question, but since we are in a stage where experimentation has its space, maybe it makes sense considering... Regarding GAnalytics, we may use some other more "indie" service? (it would be great to define what we consider indie)

The other day I saw an opensource Analytics, but you have to take care of the infraestructure or pay for a hosting. Another option is http://www.localytics.com/ - but this not being a big co is a small one so maybe it wouldn't pass our indie test...

Btw, just this morning I read a post that pretty much sums up some of what I think: http://dashes.com/anil/2014/11/its-hard-to-build-a-good-web.html

Quite right! Google often makes things too easy and it is easy to "give up"
and just use what they throw your way. A world without them is definitely
possible.

Where this would present me with more problems is when it comes to
interfering with people's choices - for instance, let's say 99% of our
users have gmail addresses and adding Google Authentication would make the
app better for them. Would you be willing to enable Google Authentication?
I personally wouldn't mind this if it meant more people would track their
donations and put the word out.

www.localytics.com looks really nice. It will be expensive, though, if we
get a lot of visitors - but that is a great problem to have I guess!
