Given all that is going on in the world right now, I hope we can improve DSCI 100 and this book one day by adding some aspects of data science ethics to the course. As a start, adding a box in each chapter in the text that brings up important ethical questions related to the topics being discussed might be a start? Some ideas just off the top of my head:
Chapter
Ethics question/topic
1 - intro
Why use code for analysis as opposed to point and click programs
2 - reading data
Can you use and share that data? and/or Your responsibility as a data scientist in understanding where the data came from
3 - wrangling
Transparency in how you cleaned/wrangled the data?
4 - visualization
Ethical data visualizations/i.e., not creating plots that are misleading
5 - version control
?
6 - 9 - supervised learning
algorithmic bias
10 - clustering
fairness
11 & 12
representative sampling / sample bias
