I've been pointed here by Steam Support who have been unable to help.
They said that "Steam for Linux is currently only supported on the latest version of 64-bit Ubuntu LTS with Unity, Gnome, or KDE desktops.".
As I understand it Mint is built on Ubuntu, so it ought to work as far as that goes, and the problem may be just my desktop.
Steam Support weren't able to answer that one.
