Steam on Mint

I've been pointed here by Steam Support who have been unable to help.
They said that "Steam for Linux is currently only supported on the latest version of 64-bit Ubuntu LTS with Unity, Gnome, or KDE desktops.".

As I understand it Mint is built on Ubuntu, so it ought to work as far as that goes, and the problem may be just my desktop.
Steam Support weren't able to answer that one.

Sorry, I don't have the full set of requested information, the computer in question is in the office and I am not. I'll post it up later if it's needed.

Ah yes, that would help. :$
It won't start. Throws up an error saying "Contact Steam Support". I'll get back to you with the exact error.
