I am using GregTech and I often have no space and the extra storage upgrage is used for the tools (Hammer, File, Saw e.g.) So I request the option, to place a chest in the main config slot (where the crafting table/furnace goes in). That chest could give 3 rows by 5? columns of space. And 1 row more with the storage upgrade. I hope I could give you an image of what I am dreaming of ;)

Instead of making a duplicate, I'm seconding this.
Although looking at the layouts, especially of the crafting table, I'd suggest 4x6 would be the ideal size to fit in the box.

Might be done with upgrades, though, to prevent storage upgrades from losing importance: 3x6 from the chest plus one row from a storage upgrade, or possibly even just 1x5 from the chest with the option to add three storage upgrades.

Should also be able to be fed from the outside:

I'm currently thinking of a setup with a furnace and a chest on top and two worktables on the bottom, refilling the chest automatically for commonly used crafting ingredients like wood planks, sticks, cobble, iron ingots, etc. No need to fetch all your ingredients for crafting beforehand, just start crafting right away or maybe bring some rarely needed ones when you need them.

Useful things I can think of right now in this regard

  • clearing the grid should try to find a matching stack in chest storage to clear to
(logical order imo: matching slots in upgrade specific storage space, matching slots in chest storage, matching slots in player inventory, empty slots in player inventory)
  • having the table emit a redstone signal while it is in use; this could be used to turn off automatic refilling while it is being used (to be able to put back materials you took out of chest storage but didn't use). This might be preferrable to putting a pressure plate in front of the table. Could be implemented as a global upgrade.
