A typical use case is to assign image layers from one or more images possibly through a functional transformation, to r g and b channels.

Examples include:

HH to red, HV to green, VV to blue
HH image 1 to red, HH image 2 to green, HH image 3 to blue
HH/VV to red, HH/HV image 2 to blue, VV**2 to green
