[Bug]: HerdHelper will not run #1267
Comments
Hey, I'm about to update the docs (and try to fix the still unknown but underlying issue). It seems that the most recent Windows update removes the helper from the Windows Services for some users. Can you try and see if that's the case? The easiest way to solve that is by running the latest installer and this will install the service again. |
Thanks for your quick reply. In checking Windows Services, I do not see anything related to Herd, unless it is under some other name. Do you mean re-install herd completely? |
I took your suggestion and reinstalled from the latest installer on the website and now I see herdHelper running in services and the status indicator is green. I still can't view the site that I didn't add manually to the hosts file, though. At what point does herdhelper add the domain to the hosts file? I wonder if I'm misunderstanding how/when that happens. |
That usually happens when you start Herd or change a directory name within a parked directory. There should also be logs now that may point us in the right direction 🙂 |
Apologies. Dumb error. I typed the URL incorrectly. :) |

Bug description
After using herd for some weeks, as of today HerdHelper will not start. I have turned on Debug mode but no logs appear in the directory shown (C:\Windows\System32\Logs). I've also tried changing the port from 5000 to 5002 as well as 5003 and 5001. Changing the port did not solve the problem. I also tried disabling my anti-virus software (MalwareBytes) and verifying that the service is on the allowed list in Windows Defender Firewall.
The only thing that seemed to work was manually running the exe file from MYUSERNAME.config\herd\bin. Doing that makes the status indicator in the config settings turn green but I still cannot access the new site in the browser. If I add the site manually to the hosts file, I can finally access the site.
I did search for other instances of this problem and found a few but the solution was not clear.
