How to setup MinGW to compile PinMAME/32
========================================

Notes
-----
The file "src\windows\setup.txt" is the original text delivered by MAME and is
out of date. Please ignore it.
PinMAME is build on MAME version 0.76 and with MinGW 2.0 / GCC 3.2.
Unfortunately the GCC 3.2 update is nomore available at the official MinGW
project homepage, so it is hosted on the PinMAME project homepage.
It has been maintained to compile with more recent MinGW packages too, but
although it compiles well with GCC 4.4/4.5 there a missing sounds on some ROMs.
Note that other GCC versions are not tested and may throw some warnings or
errors which stop the build process, hence it is recommended to use 3.2 for now.
This guide shows how to setup MinGW in version 2.0 and a setup with more recent
MinGW packages, so PinMAME and PinMAME32 can be compiled with it.

Step 1: Downloads
-----------------
- Create a directory to hold all downloads, for example c:\mingw-setup.
- Choose between a MinGW 2.0 setup or a more recent one.
For P-ROC support either use MinGW2/GCC3.2.3 setup, or MinGW5/GCC 4.5.0 setup
but with sounds issues on some ROMs.
a) MinGW 2.0
Download MinGW-2.0.0-3.exe to the downloads directory.
Unfortunately it is nomore available at the official MinGW project homepage.
Mandatory update: newer objcopy and strip executables.
* binutils-2.19.1-mingw32-bin (later versions should work too)
Get it from http://sourceforge.net/downloads/mingw/MinGW/BaseSystem/GNU-Binutils/
Recommended updates: Download latest versions of GCC 3.2 and GDB 5 for MinGW.
* gcc-3.2.3-20030504-1

b) More recent MinGW setup
Download the following binary packages to the downloads directory.
The packages carry the version numbers as of the last testing, but newer
packages should work too.
(MinGW 5 tested in June 2010)

* mingwrt-3.18-mingw32-dev (part of the Base System)
* binutils-2.20.1-2-mingw32-bin (part of the Base System)

Step 2: Setup
-------------
- Attention!!! Whenever extracting an archive then always extract it including
its directory structure, otherwise it won't work.
Use 7-Zip to unpack a lzma archive.
- Depending if it is a MinGW 2.0 setup or a more recent one:
a) MinGW 2.0
Run the MinGW installer; install to a reasoned path, for example c:\mingw2.
It contains GCC 3.2, GDB 5.1.1, mingw32-make, w32api, etc.
Extract the objcopy and strip executables to the bin folder of the
installation, e.g. c:\mingw2\bin.
* binutils-2.19.1-mingw32-bin
Extract the recommended update for GCC to the installation directory.
Some files must be overwritten ("bin/*.exe", "lib/*.a").
* gcc-3.2.3-20030504-1
Install the recommended update for GDB by running its installer; install to
the installation directory.
* gdb-5.2.1-1.exe
b) More recent MinGW setup
Create a directory to hold the MinGW installation, for example c:\mingw5.
Extract all binary packages of MinGW to the installation directory.

- Extract Allegro's DirectX package to the installation directory.
Some files are already present ("lib/libd*.a", "include/d*.h") and are
normally overwritten.

- Add the bin folder of the installation directory, e.g. c:\mingw5\bin, to the
system's path.
If multiple MinGW installations are used, then it is recommended to use batch
files to set the system's path temporary instead of changing it permanently.
Example "mingw2.bat":
path c:\mingw2\bin;%path%
Example "mingw5.bat":
path c:\mingw5\bin;%path%
Call the corresponding batch file for the needed MinGW version.
For P-ROC support additional MinGW installations are necessary:
- Extract the P-ROC library (libpinproc) package to the installation directory.
* libpinproc_20101205-mingw32-dev.tar.gz
- Extract the YAML-CPP library (libyaml-cpp) package to the installation directory.
* libyaml-cpp-0.2.5-mingw32-dev.tar.gz
- Extract the following files from FTDI's ftd2xx library (D2XX Direct Drivers)
to the installation directory.
* CDM20808.zip
- i386/ftd2xx.lib to MinGW's lib folder
- ftd2xx.h to MinGW's include folder
The other (non-MinGW) tools can be placed into separate installation directories
and added to the system's path separately (or also placed in the above mentioned
MinGW batch files).
- Run the MAME GNU-like tools installer; install to a separate installation
directory, e.g. c:\mame-gnu-like.
It contains Windows replacements for some typical GNU/Linux tools (rm, diff/patch, etc.).
* mame-gnulike.exe
Add the installation directory to the system's path (or add it to the relevant
MinGW batch files).
- Extract NASM into a separate installation directory, e.g. c:\nasm2.
* nasm-2.02-win32
Add the installation directory to the system's path (or add it to the relevant
MinGW batch files).
Note: If an older NASM Win32 package is used (<0.99.4), then rename the
executables to "nasm.exe" and "ndisasm.exe" by removing the W letter.

- Change to the PinMAME source code directory.
- If the pathes to MinGW and other tools are not set permanently, then call a
MinGW batch file to set them.
- To compile PinMAME type "mingw32-make".
- To compile PinMAME32 type "mingw32-make WINUI=1 SUFFIX=32".
- To add the MAME ROM debugger into a build, just define "DEBUG=1".
- To add P-ROC support into a PinMAME build, just define "PROC=1". Not available
for PinMAME32.
- A symbols file ("SYMBOLS=1") and map file ("MAP=1") are always created.
- To change the optimization level (default is 3), define "OPTIMIZE=<level>".
- To get verbose info during compilation, define "VERBOSE=1".

Step 5: Debugging

Load PinMAME in GDB first, then add the symbols via "symbol-file <pinmame exe>.debug".
Note that GDB 5.x versions can not handle symbols files from GCC 4.4, only up to GCC 3.2.

Build Bugs
----------
1) Builds with GCC 4.4/4.5 have several issues
a) Missing sounds on some ROMs.
Known to be affected are WPC-ROMs with pre-DCS sound, that use the CPU M6809 for sound:
* The Machine: Bride of Pinbot (bop_L7)
* Funhouse
* Terminator 2
* The Addams Family (taf_l7)
* Creature from the Black Lagoon
* and more...
Also Stern Whitestar was reported to be affected:
* Lord of the Rings
According to reports when those ROMs are loaded, then after the self-test sound
there's a slight popping sound - like the sound is turned off. On working ROMs
this sound is only heard when PinMAME quits.
The volume can be changed from -32db to 0db, but nothing is heard regardless of that settings.
b) DMD not updated
Known to be affected are Stern Whitestar:
* Lord of the Rings
This could be a problem of GCC 4.x in general or just the MinGW port of it.
Disabling optimization does not help.
As PinMAME build with GCC 4.0.1/4.5.0 on Mac OS X works fine, but not GCC 4.4.3 on Ubuntu, all hope goes to an upcoming new GCC release for MinGW.
