One possible way: write a brief white paper and post to arxiv. We can use that as the document people should cite (a la caf). We can use Google Scholar to track those citations.
As far as I know, Google Scholar only looks at actual citations. I think we should aim for acknowledgments as well, and perhaps even footnotes and other references.
This will not be 100% accurate, so we could add a disclaimer and present it after the curated list of papers we present.
