NAPS2 7.0 (beta) has finally been released! There is a long list of changes, including native support for Mac and Linux.

I've done my best to test and polish things, but as there are so many underlying changes it's inevitable that there will be various bugs and issues. If you have any feedback specific to the 7.0 beta please post it in this thread.

• Linux doesn't yet support drag and drop
• SANE "Choose Device" can take a few seconds to respond

You can download the portable (zip) version and use that. Everything will be self contained within the folder you extract it to.

Hey, first thanks for new release.
I noticed you added pdfium lib for PDF export/import. But pdfsharp lib also exists. I'm curious, what's the purpose of pdfsharp? Mostly because pdfsharp is a long abandoned project which lacks newer PDF features. If you are interested, you can look into few well maintained C# pdf libraries I found.

PdfSharpCore is under active maintenance. While there are other PDF libraries and I haven't looked at them all in detail, I have not seen another that has PdfSharp's combination of features, including:

• Encryption
• PDF/A compatibility
• Lightweight & cross-platform (native C# is a plus)
• Very fast export for large images (in part because of changes in my fork)

Pdfium is needed on top of that primarily to render arbitrary imported PDFs.

I would be open to replacing PdfSharp if there was something that was tangibly better, but as it's been "good enough" I haven't had a reason to try.

I'll also add I experimented with using solely Pdfium to export PDFs, but it's missing several key features (e.g. it can read and edit encrypted PDFs but not generate them from scratch).

The current exporter primarily uses PdfSharp but does also use Pdfium if we're exporting a previously-imported PDF.

On Linux (Ubuntu MATE 22.10), NAPS2 is not detecting my scanner: "No scanning device was found". However, "scanimage --list-devices" on the same system does detect my scanner(s):

Also, NAPS2 fails to start from the system menu, I have to launch it from the CLI using flatpak run com.naps2.Naps2.

The Flatpak does have indirect access to the host files but has separate copies of all libraries. Also the principle of a Flatpak is that it should be fully self-contained so that it works the same across all distros.

My current plan for the Flatpak is (1) include common drivers by default (2) copy any extra drivers from the host into the Flatpak SANE. That should work in most cases and be "best effort" for those extra drivers.

In the future I plan to offer non-Flatpak options (e.g. a normal apt install) that will use the system libraries. But as I just wanted one distribution type to start with Flatpak seemed the best for universal support across distros.

I think the menu issue should be fixed in beta 2.

This is confirmed fixed.

For devices not being detected, the issue is that some drivers aren't in the flatpak sandbox. For beta 2 I've included airscan, and for the next beta I will try and pull in the rest.

Unfortunately NAPS2 still fails to detect my scanner, even though "native SANE" seems to find the "airscan" version of the scanner (see scanimage output at the top of this thread).

Are there any debug options I can enable to see what's going on here, or to collect something useful for you to investigate?

I think I messed up the permissions - I'll fix it for the next beta but in the meantime you can try to fix it with flatpak override com.naps2.Naps2 --system-talk-name=org.freedesktop.Avahi.

That's working, NAPS2 now sees the "AirScan version" of my scanner, and I can scan documents.

One thing I do notice is that with NAPS2 6.1.2 on Windows with the TWAIN driver, the white balance of the resulting scan is much better, e.g. whites are just more white. If I switch to the WIA driver on windows however I get results that are mostly similar to my scan results on Linux: whites are much more like greys. I can get close though by playing a bit with the Brightness setting on the scanner profile.

For the white balance, you can also try using "Document Correction" under the Image menu. That's something I've been working on to automatically correct white balance and other issues.

I am using an M1 MacBook on MacOS 13.1 (Ventura). Just tested the beta version.

The "Skip saving dialog" option does not seem to have an effect. I configured it with a few placeholders but when hitting save or save as, a window pops up requesting me to enter a file name.

On the machines that I manage, I always leave the "automatic updates" option turned off, and Donate enabled. However, I noticed that it doesn't work properly.

Duplex scanning does not seem to work when using the Apple driver. I can select the option in the profile and it is using the document feeder but the scanned pages are only one-sided.
Not sure if that is a problem of the driver or something is wrong with NAPS2.

I had been holding off on feedback because I thought that it wasn't really been maintained. How wrong I was! Wow! Great to see that you are still working on it.

NAPS2 has hands down been the best scanning program I have found because it is just so simple to use. Great for my parents who are not that computer savvy, because the manufacturer scanning software is not that easy to use, and also gives the option to change brands without having to re-learn the process.

I love how the third-party files which need to be downloaded the first time you use a feature and now included, so much easier to set up.

If I could make one suggestion to improve usability, it would be to be able to add a 'Profiles' toolbar to be able to quickly scan of each profile rather than use the drop-down button, because the drop-down is quite a small target to click for novice users.

I'm using beta 7.0.4.0 on macOS Ventura on an M1 Mac Mini and have noticed the following issues:

When going to add a scan profile, the device selector list doesn't show the printer names as shown by macOS, nor does the list refresh if you remove printers from the system or reset the printing system on macOS:

I should also say - thanks for your work to make this amazing app work cross-platform. NAPS2 has been my go-to recommendation as a scanner app for Windows users and, once it's out of beta, will become my go-to recommendation for Mac and Linux users as well :) I can't wait to try it on my home machine~

The list of scanners comes directly from macOS so there's not much I can do to change that. Remembering toolbar preferences should be fixed in 7.0b5.

Thanks! I'll update to the new beta and check it out! As for the scanner list, I'll see if I can reset whatever subsystems provide that info (if it's user-resettable) and see how that goes.

I know CUPS can get funky sometimes, so if the scanning equivalent to CUPS is the same way, it should be a trivial fix.

It would be nice if the crop-page feature would have a memory function for the next pages we modify, like it had in the 6.x version.
Without that feature all pages of the output pdf will be differently sized.

Beside that I liked the ability to crop pages by an exact number of pixels for text documents, while the current cropping feature is great for individual fotos. Is it possible to have both, the manual selection and the pixel selection for cropping?

On Linux (Ubuntu MATE 22.10)

I'm quite happy with the AirScanner driver overall with my Epson L6190. The only weird thing is that the very first time I initiate a new scan with a particular profile, it says "Scanner is not online". If I immediately click 'Scan' again, it works fine however.

First of all: a big THANK YOU ❤️ for the linux release and all the previous work. I've used NAPS2 for a long time on windows and after my complete switch on an extra virtual mashine. I am using it on Debian 11 (Bookworm) and it just works for me. ✅

And at least it saved me a bunch of money for buying an alternative software. So i will considering about donating to support the development!

In my opinion function goes before design, but is it maybe possible to match the window themes (KDE) and respect the dark mode in the whole application? My eyes are burning in the night 😄

I have two suggestions to make.
With a view to using some older scanners and upgrading a large computer fleet.

1st) Related to this change: 7.0b1- TWAIN UI should no longer be visible in console and batch mode...

Would it be possible to put some checkbox in the configuration allowing the visualization as it was previously, so as not to suppress the driver window? I have some older scanners, and these show specific messages in the TWAIN UI, eg paper jam, lamp heating, etc. It would be nice if I could activate that window on those specific scanners. Allowing only with Native Transfer is already a good option.

2nd) Related to this change: 7.0b4- "Alternative Transfer" has been renamed "Memory Transfer" and is now used when "Default" is selected...
Thinking about a park of 3000 computers, some scanners such as "Canon DR-2580c" and "Samsung SCX-6555nx network driver" do not work correctly with the new standard method.

It would be interesting to change the <TwainImpl>Default</TwainImpl> of the profiles.xml file. where the new method would be called NewDefault, allowing scanners already configured to use the old implementation that is now Native Transfer.

A second option that I think is more viable would be to use version <Version>2</Version> of this file, when read from older versions of XML, naps will understand that it is a Native Transfer.
This means that I don't have to reconfigure around 1000 scanners installed in the company.

Can someone point me in the right direction regarding sizes? I'm trying to scan A4 pages (297x210mm) but the sizing is always slightly off (like 296.3x209.4). I've selected both options regarding page sizes (extend/cut down size) and tested deactivating one or both but that didn't help. Tested with both TWAIN and WIA as well. Any ideas?

noticed that the cropping tool has changed. when i get more used to it hopefully I'll find it an improvement. Other than dragging the bars to crop the image are there any other keys to use that have special uses when using the cropping tool? I'm always looking to discover hidden features :)

I am encountering a problem when scanning from the HP LaserJet Flow MFP E52645. It also only happens when I use the colored option, it happens in NAPS v6 too.
The page is fetched but the error still occurs before closing the dialog with the driver.
I collected the logs of that version that you sent me days ago.
Is it something that can be resolved?

Is there anything in the Windows event log under Application when that happens? That error probably means that the TWAIN process crashed. I can make NAPS2 ignore that error when a page has been received, but ideally we could see if there's a fixable error.

I collected the logs, honestly I don't understand anything that's going on. There is a lot of information in pt-br in these logs, I think google translate can help if necessary.

I am using the latest beta and am encountering a problem with batch scanning. I'm using a Brother ET-3760 and the twain driver in NAPS (encountered with WIA as well) with Windows 11. I've set up to scan with prompts between pages, but I never get a prompt, and the scanned page (1st page scanned) doesn't get loaded or saved. The only clue that it captured the page is that it says page 2 on the batch box. I was trying to get 1 page per file. The only way to get out is to cancel the batch, then the whole thing hangs and I have to use task manager to cancel the program. The only way I can scan is to use the single scan which does work. Batch does not. I like the save feature in the batch, which can't be used when single scanning.

Do normal scans (not batch) work normally (even if you do multiple in a row)? Does batch scanning work with version 6.1.2?

I am currently scanning with using just f2 or f3, whichever my finger happens to hit with no problems. Batch scanning didn't work in 6.1.2 (on my new Windows 11 computer) but it did before on my Windows 7 computer, but I can't remember what version that was (I don't have that computer any more). When I set up this computer I pulled the latest and greatest version (6.1.2) and the batch didn't work, so I thought I'd try the beta. Neither worked.
No error log was generated. I emptied out my error log to be sure that I was recording an error just for that test, but none was generated for the session I just tested which failed again. Prior to that though this was in the error log, but I don't know if that will help:

I have an issue sometime where I can't scan. this happened this morning running on latest beta b7 but I also had what I think is same issue on the latest non-beta version. To get things working what I used to do was unplug the USB cable and plug in back in again then everything works as expected. I didn't try that with the issue I had this morning. I tried to close the app but wasn't able to. I forgot how to bring on Task Manager. I opened another instance of NAPS and still counldn't scan. so in the end I just rebooted my PC and then everything was ok. below is my error log:

What I like very much is that the scanned and ocred pages can stay in the NAPS window after saving as pdf. So you can save single pages again or deleting single pages before the next export. The operating concept is really great! 👍

since changing from WIA to TWAIN driver I've not had any issues, The scanning progress bar is out of sync though. when scanning is complete the progress bar is at 75% most times.

Here where I work, we installed Naps2 in 30 Ubuntu 18.04 workstations, which use 15 Canon equipment. After several tests, we noticed that scanning from Glass doesn't always work.

Issues:

• Sometimes the device does the scanning process but don't display the image (pop-up a "scanner offline" message).
• In other cases, "equipment is offline" message pop-up. We tested several configurations (escl with and without SSL, airscan), without satisfactory results.

Therefore, we are using only the Feeder (escl, non SSL), which has been stable.

Installed deb version and the error don't occur... Previously, my issue with deb was finding the device in the list, but I'm guessing the steps done after this try (like installing Scangear and IJ Printer Driver right from Canon site) solved the issue of listing the devices properly. Will try using the deb for a while.

Some things I noticed during my usage in the last weeks (macOS Ventura 13.3, M1 Apple Silicon):

• It would be nice to be able to delete a scanned page with the 'Backspace' button. Currently this is only possible by using 'Del', which is missing on macs and needs additional keystrokes.
• The 'black/white' view is very pixelated. I am not sure if that is intended due to performance reasons, but I remember that this was better on the windows version.

• When you have multiple pages and open a single page in a detailed view, one can navigate with the arrow buttons between the other pages. On mac every arrow press results in an 'error sound', which is a bit annoying.
• The currently selected page is highlighted with a blue border. Sometimes this border seems to freeze on a particular page. Currently I can't replicate it but it happens regularly for me.

I think I can replicate the freezing of the blue highlighting border now:

1. Scan multiple pages or open a pdf with multiple pages
2. Highlight all pages by holding down CMD and selecting them individually or by pressing CMD+A
3. Now, when every page has a blue border, I expect that when I click on a single page, only this page is selected. However, nothing happens, all pages are still selected with the blue border.

If one deselects one page by clicking on it while holding down CMD and then clicks on the page without the blue border, then the blue border disappears from all other pages.

That's just how Mac works. You can see the same behavior in e.g. the Photos app. If you click on empty space all pages should be deselected.

Hi, I just switched from the flatpak version to the deb version, and noticed that NAPS2 doesn't handle my Dark theme very well: [image: image.png] For the te second profile here, the name of the profile is not visible, probably because it is printed in white. If I select it, you can see the name: [image: image.png] One benefit I've immediately noticed for the DEB version is that I can use the locally installed official Epson driver for this scanner, which results in much better "white handling" over the airscan driver that the NAPS2 flatpak version had to use... I'd like to merge PDF files that I created with tesseract but NAPS2 7.0.9.0 seems to drop the OCR text information of the original files in contrast to older version 6.1.2.

Is there any way in NAPS2 beta to keep the OCR text information?

The PDF files have been directly created with tesseract by calling for example

tesseract.exe Test.jpg Test --tessdata-dir C:\tesseract\tessdata -l deu -c tessedit_create_pdf=1

If I import the created PDF document Test.pdf into NAPS2 6.1.2 and press 'save PDF' the new PDF file still contains the text information.

If I do the same with NAPS2 7.0.9.0 the new PDF only contains the image data but no longer the text information.

For both tests the option 'Make PDFs searchable using OCR' was disabled of course.

(You'd get the same issue in 6.1.2 if you imported a NAPS2-OCR'd PDF and then saved it with OCR off. 7.x ends up treating some other imported PDFs the same way.)

Can you please add a placeholder in the PDF file name using OCR to scan the first line of the document, if you have the OCR option enabled?

Similar to how Word and Google Docs suggests files names when you go to save it.

I am looking for a batch scanning function where the text from code39 barcode on Patch-T page is used as a placeholder in file name.
So if Barcode says "AB0001" then I can use that as placeholder like $(barcode) in the generated filename, like
$(barcode)-$(nnnnnn).pdf
So that each page scanned in duplex will be prefixed by barcode and followed by 6 digit number, like
AB0001-0000001.pdf

Each time a new batch is started, then the second number would restart, but this could be an option.

would be the first document scanned of two pages (each side) in pdf format, hopefully using ccitt internally.

Is this feasible now (and I missed it) or if not, is it feasible to add it?
I can probably find funding if someone can implement this at reasonable fixed cost.
