As the title says, the file manager/explorer doesn't show external USB drives, or disks.

things to do:

  • detect external USB drives
  • (possibly auto)mount them

when would it automount the drives? system startup or file manager open?

i assume it'd be when file manager is opened

It should only mount if you click on the partition, otherwise it could get annoying in some circumstances
For automounting on system boot it's better to modify the /etc/fstab file
