How to use icons in layout files?

To set a small calendar icon before the publication date of a blog post, I would now have accessed fontawesome and the blog-start.html.

Neither inserting<i class="fa-solid fa-calendar-days"></i> nor [icon icon-calender-days icon-2x] (or any other icon name) in front of the code <div class="entry-meta"><?php echo $page->getDateHtml("published") ?></div> gets me here further.

What am I doing wrong?
