Bitbucket's permissions don't allow deploy keys with write permission, which means that people can't create Bitbucket repos with a "Deploy to Netlify" button. Since this leaves Bitbucket users out from the Start with a Template page, it would be nice to be able to link to a tutorial on the Netlify CMS blog.

It could follow these steps:

  1. Clone a starter repo to Bitbucket. The post could include both the Hugo and Gatsby starters from the templates page, since setup will be the same for either. The repos should be linked directly, rather than in Deploy to Netlify buttons.
  2. Link the repository to Netlify (like in the video here).
  3. Follow Step 1 of the Git Gateway backend setup. (Step 2 will already be done in the repo, and step 3 is optional.)
  4. Continue with the steps to access Netlify CMS on your new site from the "Start with a Template" page.

I actually tried this yesterday without knowing this step by step suggestion existed as an open issue. Turns out Netlify doesn't allow a user to turn on Git Gateway in the Netlify dasboard when the repo is hosted on bitbucket. I might have missed something but my experience is that step 3 doesn't work.

D'oh, you're right. There's an internal PR for this in the Netlify UI, but it hit a snag. I'll update here when things change.

DId this ever get resolved or do we have to use github over bitbucket?

@daveharrisonnet Depends what you mean by resolved. You still can't create Bitbucket repos using the 'Deploy to Netlify' button. You can use Bitbucket with the steps above, as long as you are fine with your users login in with a bitbucket account. If you want to use Git Gateway you have to deploy to Github or Gitlab.

Perhaps someone who uses Bitbucket backend can comment if or current Bitbucket docmention is sufficient or we need further elaboration?
