permanent fix for doctests #9

as per issue #7:

doctests used to fail upon execution. as a temporary measure, doctests are paused.

However, for planned update 1.0.0: we want doctests to be either:

disabled if they require authentication
enabled for those that can be run on the fly

recording this for the future.
