This feature request is illustrated in the demo shown in this issue.

The solution I found suggests switching from kramdown to CommonMarkGhPages (like this). This shakes up a lot of the existing markdown renders. Is there any alternate solution with a surgical precision? The blogsite interface is magnificent, and I am inclined to avoid solutions that make major changes.
