Hey Katie,

Story: As a user I would like to know how I can use a tool that seems to be useful for me

Could you add a very simple example in the readme to tell how the tool can be used?

I assume it has something to do with the magnifying glass icon appearing next to Add Reference. However, I can't click it (or rather, clicking it has no effect in the UI nor on the JavaScript console.)

…saw it has no effect since I tried it on test.wikidata.

Same here… I installed it like this: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Pintoch/common.js
But I did not notice any new button or link on item pages.

@wetneb "autofill" button is added when you enter a reference url in a reference.

More documentation though is indeed needed here
